When you make an exchange is when you know the relative value of something you own, whether it is a week at a timeshare or a certain number of points. What you can exchange it for (trading use), and what it cost you in the purchase price (one-time cost) and maintenance (on-going cost) is the key to value. Before you can understand the value of this deal, you need to know a few things about how exchanges work in the RCI system … When you make an exchange request online with RCI, the amount of Points required for that vacation is posted on the RCI website, whether it is searching for Weeks resorts or Points resorts. You can compare size, season, and length of stay for different point values. This is a live reservation system that allows you to browse and complete your exchanges online -- the same system that you and RCI will use when you call them. RCI Points are RCI Points. You wouldn't want to spend 80,000-135,000 RCI Points for a Hilton Grand Vacation Club exchange if you can exchange the correct RCI Week for the same vacation. You must have a strong Week, (non-Points), in your RCI Weeks account to do this. As an aside, we paid less for the 5 than the 1 in Captiva.Over this past New Years, we took the family, all 9 of us, to Cozumel, Mexico where we stayed at the El Cid, a Royal Crown resort. We were able to obtain 3 one bedrooms thru the RCI exchange program ( pretty good when you consider RCI has only 22 rooms at the resort ). We needed a fourth room and we had to pay the regular hotel rate. Believe it or not, the amount we paid the resort for the week cost the same, if not less, as purchasing a timeshare! What was even more amazing to us was the fact that the hotel unit did not hold a candle to the timeshare units.Although Club Regina, in Puerto Vallarta, was more plush, we really enjoyed our stay at El Cid. The rooms were a good size, well decorated, and with terraces directly overlooking and literally a few feet from the beach .The friendly staff and the service provided was excellent. Although the resort was fully occupied, the facilities were not at all crowded- just as we like it.We are already looking forward to our next vacation which is scheduled for this March where will be going to the Pueblo Bonito resort in Matzalan. I’m currently conducting other searches for various dates for next year. In fact, I just accepted a match to the Sapphire Club in St Maarten. I do not want to jinx myself, but to date, I’ve been 100% successful trading into all my matches, all Royal Crown resorts. Trading and working the RCI system is a lot of fun. They went on to tell me that the property that I own (S. Africa) has wonderful trading ability. They said that some other properties are rated at 30% and mine is rated at 85%. We had a wonderful vacation. The place is absolutely paradise. The only draw back that we found was the location. To get into the main part of town you must take a taxi which costs about $20.00 US each way. Since there aren't many restaurants in the area of Nuevo Vallarta it is necessary to go into town or to Marina Vallarta, which costs about $10.00 US each way. All in all we loved the vacation. The weather was perfect, as was the golf for Larry, Bob and Mark. The hotel is unbelievable. The staff was so friendly, helpful and always smiling. In spite of the location, I would recommend this. Dear Scott & Sandra, I wanted to share with you a few of our recent trades for our South Africa timeshares. Last June, my wife and I traded our time share for a 3 bedroom, 3 bathroom, 1,500 square foot villa on the grounds of a castle in Scotland. According to them, it was the ancestral home of Robert The Bruce, the first King of Scotland. The unit was amazing. It was actually a single family home on the grounds of the castle. The location was great for golfers...7 miles from St. Andrews. We aren't golfers, but the sightseeing in Scotland was incredible. We drove all over the country as well as throughout England. We spent 6 days in Scotland and 5 days in England. The four nights that we spent in England, 2 at bed and breakfasts and 2 at a hotel, cost about 3 times what the week at the timeshare cost. What a bargain it was. I would highly recommend a trip like we took to anyone that likes to travel. I've attached a few pictures that I took while we were there. The first is of Stonehenge, the second is the view over Edinburgh from Edinburgh Castle and the third is of Big Ben & Parliament, taken from the London Eye, a 150 meter high ferris wheel in London. I still look at the pictures and can't believe that we made that trip. 5 weeks later, we took our kids to Utah & Las Vegas. In Utah, we went to Bryce Canyon and Zion National parks, as well as making the drive down to Arizona to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It never ceases to amaze me when I look at the natural beauty this world has to offer. Again, I would recommend that everyone go see these amazing parks. The scenery was magnificent. This now brings to 5 the number of times we've traded our timeshares. We've now been to Spain, Mexico, Scotland, Utah & Las Vegas. We currently have searches on for Ireland and Italy. I have to say, that the timeshares that we bought were probably the best purchases I've ever made. When I first purchased a time share in South Africa I thought I was out of my mind. But the price was such that I had to take a chance. I had no intention of ever going to South Africa. I only wanted to ski and play golf and not in that order. It has been three years now and I have gone to Hilton Head, Kauai, Colorado, and this year I am again planning to go to Kauai in January, Dillion, Colorado in February, the World Golf Village in St Augustine in March, Hilton Head in October. and Palm Springs in November. This has been wonderful for my wife and I and sometimes family and friends to get away. Only in St Augustine did I trade for only a one bedroom. In all other cases I was able to get a two bedroom or more and invite my best friend and his wife and in other cases my grown kids. My friend has purchased a timeshare in the same place where we stayed last time in Kauai, Hawaii and paid $22,000 and has maintenance fees of over $900 per year and we went there for the cost of the timeshare in Africa. As you know I was so excited about these that I have purchased on for each of my three kids and gave them for Christmas presents. They are overjoyed!!! The only downside is that you have to plan ahead. To me that was never a problem but this would not work for the last minute traveler. There are even other ways to save on golf. Portland, Oregon letter from SA: Hi Scott, This is our fifth week in So. Africa. Umdloti and Umhlanga Rocks were terrific. Right on the Indian Ocean, so we didn't get out and about like we should have. Did get in to Durban a few days, to the BAT Centre for jazz, to the Victoria (Indian) Market, Joe Cools ("the worst restaurant in the world.) Wasn't bad! We have been here at DIkhololo at here for 2 1/2 weeks now- many animals and birds right at our door and in the bushveld. 10 different antelope, zebra, gnu, giraffes all close enough to touch. We've driven around the resort area and 3 times in the bush, and once on a guided trip. Very nice. They've added TVs to each room, which is nice. The electricity was out one day, for major repairs. We have our own patio with braii and they clean it every day, in addition to cleaning our rooms. We have one bedroom with loft- sleeps four. Have 4 weeks scheduled here, but think we'll leave a week early so we can see a bit of Pretoria and Joburg. (Took Greyhound from Durban, taking the train to Cape Town). In general we have been satisfied with our trades and membership as we are flexible and prefer to travel in the side seasons with more availability and less crowds. We have read about many people complaining about how long the processing of deeds and getting on to RCI Points takes. We started dealing with Scott the evening of 11/22/05. He e-mailed us a one page contract which we faxed back to him in the morning with a copy of our check. Our deed was recorded on the 30th of Nov. and we had it in our hand on Dec. 5th. We received an e-mail from Scott early this morning with our points account number and now we are online with RCI Points all in less than 3 weeks. When he found out what I paid especially in comparison to what they are offering (the timeshares there are starting at $10,000)........ he begged me not tell anyone else at the resort. Very nice resort we had 2 rooms for my girlfriend and I. More then what we needed, we were thrilled. When I was there I know 2 people I talked out of buying there and gave them you web site. Melia was selling weeks for $10,000 US$. I think these 2 woman from Chicago will be contacting you for sure. Houston, Texas Hi, This is Stan, I bought a points package from you around a year ago, so far it has worked great. We have stayed in three different places all for the $297.00 maintenance fee. So far the places we have stayed are like 2 bedroom apartments for a lot less than a motel room. We have also stayed at a resort in Wisconsin, 20 minutes from our house, 3 weekends for 8000 points each time, this place charges $200-$250 a night all year round. In the nine months since we purchased our two weeks in South Africa, our daughter have had a wonderful week at the Princeville Resorts in Kauai, Hawaii, and we recently returned from a wonderfully relaxing week in at the Barrier Island Station in Duck, North Carolina, where our timeshare was a two minute walk from the magnificent beach. We were impressed with the facility and what it offered. This was our first experience with time sharing and we never really believed in it before. Thanks, , D.D.S. update: Dear Scott, We spent Christmas '02 week in Palm Beach, Florida and stayed at the Gold Crown Palm Beach Shores Resort, where we had an oceanfront unit. Each day we went walking nearby in a beautiful park, sat on the beach and ordered drinks from the beach bar service, and in the evenings, walked around the beautiful City Lights Shopping Area. This resort was very busy selling timeshares, the come-ons which we avoided. However, one day, in the elevator, we began speaking to the TimeShare manager. I asked him how much one week sold for...he asked me "Christmas week??? That sells for $30,000. Do you own any timeshares?" Unable to contain our smiles (and smirks), I "innocently" replied "yes, in South Africa." He quickly said, "Oh, you got one of those great deals, please don't tell anyone here about that or I will go out of business." I must admit I had my doubts. Using my South African weeks, this past year I have been able to journey to Las Vegas at the Hilton Vacation Club, Massanutten in Virginia, Tradewinds Cruise Club in St. Maarten, and shortly, to Istanbul, Turkey. All doubts have been erased. I also own a timeshare at Massanutten and I am ashamed to admit that it does not have the trading power of any of my three South African weeks. It especially hurts me that I paid more that twice for my one every other year Massanutten week than for my three South African weeks. The cruise to St. Maarten was spectacular. While sailing, I found out that one couple had used 124,000 points for the trip. Another couple had paid close to $3,000 for the week trip. RCI had charged them just over 2 cents for each of the 124,000 points the trip cost. Neither couple could believe what the trip cost me. Basically the savings on this one trip paid for almost the entire cost of two of my South African weeks. Astonishing. And now you are providing me a very low cost entry into the RCI points, which will enhance the value of my South African weeks while provide me and my family greater vacation flexibility.
